Day in the Life

Gareth is a Scrum Master/Team Manager here at Naimuri and has been with the business for five months.

He shares a little insight into what made him join the company, his day-to-day role and about working in technology.

What attracted you to the company?

When I decided to leave my last role I had a checklist to identify my next dream job. Every one of those checkboxes was ticked the more I found out about the role so it was a bit of a no brainer for me really. Plus the mission is incredibly important and one that I could easily get behind 100%!

Briefly describe what you do day-to-day?

I lead two teams for one of our customers.
This involves facilitating sprint ceremonies, making sure we are focusing on quality, continuous improvement and coaching the team and the customer stakeholders in agile principles.
There is a lot of planning and forecasting involved as well as huge amounts of stakeholder management. It is so important to keep your stakeholders engaged and informed if you want their support as you drive your teams forward.

What interested you about a career in technology?

I've been in technology since I left school in 1990. I knew it was the future and that I wanted to be part of it. I started in a small training company doing a YTS type course to get a City & Guilds, once I had completed that I went into full time employment and never looked back.

What are the top five skills you need to do your role?

  • Empathy & Understanding
  • Being able to listen and lead by doing nothing (I know that sounds weird but it’s an actual thing!)
  • Agile knowledge and experience
  • Coaching skills
  • Customer engagement and relationship management

What are the best things about working for Naimuri?

I am really close to our customer's mission so I feel like I am contributing to making the UK a safer place. There is also a great people focused culture here and the flexibility to work in a way that makes you as productive as possible.

What makes Naimuri unique from other tech companies?
We are small and nimble, but have tons of experience delivering projects in an agile way. A lot of companies say that they are agile, but we actually live and breathe it.

What advice would you give someone considering a career in tech?

If it interests you then put in the effort and commit to it.
If you work hard and learn things you can have a very good, and long, career in tech.
I’ve done everything from Service Desk Analyst, Field Engineer, Senior Engineer, Team Leader, Service Delivery Manager, Project Manager and now Scrum Master.
There are so many opportunities once you have your foot in the door, you should never get bored.

What are your career aspirations?

My previous manager challenged me to become one of the leading agile coaches in Manchester when I left my last employer. I intend to take on that challenge. Having looked into that further I have a long way to go but am definitely on the right path!
